Systems thinking is a management approach that examines how different parts of a business interact to influence overall performance. Rather than treating problems as isolated events, it considers the relationships, processes, feedback loops and underlying structures that produce particular outcomes. It recognises that decisions made in one area can have unintended consequences elsewhere. For example, in financial services, reducing the time allocated to client verification may improve onboarding efficiency but increase compliance risk, regulatory breaches and future remediation costs. Systems thinking encourages managers to evaluate these interconnected effects before making decisions, supporting a more holistic understanding of business performance.
