The manner in which humans communicate is complex. Not only does communication consist of words, sentence construction and tone, it is also made up of non-verbal cues. Non-verbal communication consists of the transmission of messages or signals such as eye contract, facial expressions, gestures, posture and body language. Understanding non-verbal communication is critical, especially when body language is not aligned with the verbal statements made; in other words, people often say one thing whilst their body language tells another story altogether. To make sense of what a client may really be meaning and to ensure clarity, it is essential to be aware of both their non-verbal communication as well as yours.
